I commenti di Ssiv su il viaggio di Orfeo

Il viaggio di Orfeo ha due chiavi di lettura.

1) Il testo è una mia personale rivisitazione del mito di Orfeo. Ade è infastidito dall'arroganza con cui Orfeo è sceso all'inferno e gli restituisce Euridyce, ma ad un prezzo: finché non sarà uscito dall'Ade, Orfeo non dovrà mai guardarla in faccia. Il Dio dell'oltretomba lo lascia con un monito: "conosci il tuo posto". L'invito a stare al proprio posto rimanda ad un detto della Grecia antica: "conosci te stesso ed abbi la consapevolezza di essere inferiore a Zeus". E' un invito a conoscere i propri limiti.

Orfeo ha superato i propri limiti una prima volta quando è sceso nell'Ade, ed una seconda volta quando si è girato per guardare Euridice, appena poco prima di tornare nel mondo dei vivi. Chiedendo ad Orfeo di non voltarsi per tutto il tragitto, Ade aveva messo alla prova la sua fiducia negli Dei.

Per questo, il Dio ha appositamente fatto in modo che per tutto il viaggio di ritorno, Orfeo fosse divorato dai dubbi su chi fosse davvero la creatura alle sue spalle.

Gli spiriti dell'oltretomba fanno una profezia ad Orfeo, confidandogli che verrà ucciso da una donna. Orfeo crederà che si riferiscano al fantasma di Euridice, ma in realtà gli spiriti si riferivano alle baccanti di Dionisio che lo uccideranno in futuro.

Orfeo si volta volontariamente a guardare Euridice all'ultimo secondo perché non si fida di Ade, dimostrando così di "non conoscere il proprio posto", e per questo perde Euridice per la seconda volta

2) Il testo si riferisce simbolicamente a Toby. Lui è il protagonista dell'album e qualsiasi cosa, in un modo o nell'altro, riguarda lui. Toby aveva proiettato i migliori lati di se stesso su una donna crudele, indifferente e sfuggente. (vedi il testo di "Lust Loves Loss")

Quando, infine, questa donna si è stancata di giocare con lui e gli ha detto addio (vedi il testo di "Burn Like a Candle"), Toby ha continuato ad idealizzarla. L'ostinazione con cui Toby si è rifiutato di vedere quella donna per quella che era davvero lo ha portato ad un'elaborazione della separazione travagliata e sofferta.

Toby ha fatto di tutto per "salvarla" dentro di sè, in modo da poter salvare i lati di sé che aveva proiettato su di lei e che non riconosceva in se stesso. Ha fatto anche troppo, contro ogni evidenza, si è attaccato morbosamente all'immagine di lei che aveva creato. Ma la creazione spetta agli Dei. Attaccarsi troppo morbosamente ad una propria idealizzazione vuol dire ribellarsi arrogantemente alla verità e all'ordine naturale delle cose.

Così, anche Toby, come Orfeo, si è macchiato della colpa di non "conoscere il proprio posto" e ha pagato per questo: come Orfeo, è sceso nell'inferno dei suoi ricordi per provare a salvarla dentro di sè, e come Orfeo ha fallito.

Toby, quindi, non riesce a ricongiungersi con la parte migliore di se stesso.

Ssiv's comments on The Journey of Orpheus

The journey of Orpheus has two interpretations.

1) the lyrics are my personal reinterpretation of the myth of Orpheus. Hades is annoyed by the arrogance with which Orpheus has descended into hell and returns Euridyce to him, but at a price: until he has left Hades, Orpheus must never look her in the face. The god of the underworld leaves him with a warning: "know your place". The invitation to stay in one's place refers to a saying from ancient Greece: 'know thyself and be aware that you are inferior to Zeus'. It is an invitation to know one's limits.

Orpheus overcame his limits a first time when he descended into Hades, and a second time when he turned to look at Eurydice, just before returning to the world of the living. By asking Orpheus not to turn around the whole way, Hades had tested his trust in the gods.

For this, the God purposely made sure that throughout the return journey, Orpheus was consumed by doubts as to who the creature behind him really was.

The spirits of the underworld make a prophecy to Orpheus, confiding in him that he will be killed by a woman. Orpheus believes they are referring to the ghost of Eurydice, but in reality the spirits were referring to the Bacchae of Dionysus who will kill him in the future.

 Orpheus voluntarily turns to look at Eurydice at the last second because he does not trust Hades, thus proving that he 'does not know his place', and therefore loses Eurydice for the second time. 

2) The lyrics refer symbolically to Toby  He is the protagonist of the album and everything, in one way or another, is about him. Toby had projected the best sides of himself onto a cruel, indifferent and elusive woman (see the lyrics of 'Lust Loves Loss').

When, finally, this woman got tired of playing with him and said goodbye to him (see the lyrics of "Burn Like a Candle"), Toby continued to idealise her. The stubbornness with which Toby refused to see that woman for who she really was led him to a troubled and painful separation.

Toby did everything he could to 'save' her within himself, so that he could save the sides of himself that he had projected onto her and that he did not recognise in himself. He also did too much, against all evidence, he became morbidly attached to the image of her that he had created. But creation is up to the gods. To cling too morbidly to one's own idealisation is to arrogantly rebel against the truth and the natural order of things.

Thus, Toby too, like Orpheus, was guilty of not 'knowing his place' and paid for it: like Orpheus, he descended into the hell of his memories to try to save her within himself, and like Orpheus he failed.

Toby thus fails to meet the best part of himself.

I commenti di Ssiv su Vestendo la mia morte

Toby assiste al suicidio di uno sconosciuto
 nella copertina di Vestendo la mia morte

Vestendo la mia morte è una canzone sul suicidio del protagonista dell'album. Toby si sente rifiutato dagli altri, la sua diversità non viene compresa e accettata. Solitudine, vergogna, rabbia e disgusto di sé lo spingono quindi, infine, a togliersi la vita, nella speranza di poter essere uguale agli altri almeno nella morte.  Non viene mai chiarito, ma Toby decide di tagliarsi le vene ("taglio via la tacita colpa").

Toby muore odiando se stesso e gli altri, che considera colpevoli del suicidio che sta per compiere. Crede che tutta la cattiveria e il disprezzo degli altri nei suoi confronti avessero lo scopo di portarlo a uccidersi.

La canzone, quindi, affronta il tema delle conseguenze delle "aggressioni invisibili", psicologiche ed emotive, che l'uomo mette in atto contro i suoi simili come forma di sublimazione dell'omicidio diretto.

Toby si uccide lasciando una profezia all'umanità: gli uomini saranno veramente uniti solo quando saranno tutti morti.

Ssiv's comments on Dressing My Demise

Toby witnesses the suicide of a stranger on
 the cover of Dressing My Demise

Dressing My Demise is a song about the suicide of the album's protagonist. Toby feels rejected by others, his diversity is not understood and accepted. Loneliness, shame, anger and self-loathing drive him therefore, finally, to take his own life, in the hope of being able to be equal to others at least in death .  It is never made clear, but Toby decides to slit his wrists ('I cut away the unspoken guilt').

Toby dies hating himself and others, whom he considers guilty of the suicide he is about to commit. He believes that all the malice and contempt of others towards him was intended to lead him to kill himself. 

The song, therefore, addresses the theme of the consequences of the 'invisible aggressions', psychological and emotional, that man enacts against his fellow man, as a form of sublimation of direct murder.

Toby kills himself leaving a prophecy to mankind: men will only be truly united when they are all dead.
